Surah Al-‘Asr: 4 Ways Not to Waste Your Life

Some days pass in a blur. We finish our work, answer messages and handle responsibilities. Yet at the end of the day, one question remains: What truly mattered in the hours we were given?

Surah Al-‘Asr is one of the shortest chapters of the Quran. In just three verses, it tells us that human beings are in a state of loss, except those who hold firmly to four things: faith, righteous deeds, encouraging one another to the truth and encouraging one another to patience.

Time Is More Than a Number on a Clock

In Surah Al-‘Asr (103:1–3), Allah swears by time and reminds us of these four conditions for avoiding loss. The surah asks us to look beyond busy schedules and impressive achievements. How we live, what we believe and how we treat others matter.

1. Faith: Know Where You Are Going

Most of us have plans. We want security, success and peace for our families. Faith gives our ambitions direction. It helps us ask whether the choices we make bring us closer to what Allah loves.

Faith does not remove every difficulty. It gives us a compass when our plans change.

2. Righteous Deeds: Put Good Intentions Into Action

We may intend to read the Quran, help a neighbour or speak more kindly. But good intentions become meaningful when we act on them. Sometimes the first step is small: understanding one verse, making a thoughtful call or choosing not to respond harshly.

A righteous deed does not have to look impressive. It should be sincere and in line with Islamic guidance.

3. Encourage One Another Towards Truth

We all need people who remind us of what is right with wisdom and care. Sometimes we can be that person for someone else.

The Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, taught that whoever guides another person to goodness receives a reward like the one who does it, as narrated in Sahih Muslim 1893a.

Sharing reliable knowledge, giving a kind reminder or inviting a friend to learn the Quran can become a meaningful act of service. The reminder, however, must be grounded in truth.

4. Encourage One Another Towards Patience

Knowing what is right does not make doing it easy. We grow tired, face setbacks and sometimes lose motivation. This is why patience stands beside truth in the surah.

Patience is not an excuse to ignore wrongdoing. It is the strength to keep trying, act with integrity and persevere when progress is slow.

What Will Remain After Us?

Another hadith mentions three things through which benefit continues after a person dies, including ongoing charity and beneficial knowledge. This is narrated in Sahih Muslim 1631.

It is a reminder to think beyond what we gain today. What goodness might continue to benefit others tomorrow?
